THE PROPERTY The Property This very special beachside house has been created around a 19th Century luxury American railway carriage made by Jackson and Sharp of Delaware in 1897. This is the only one of their luxury private carriages to come to the UK. Used as part of the Folkstone train until 1914, Tulip went into storage for a few years before being refurbished for use on special occasions when it is believed to have carried royalty and other prominent passengers of the time. After some 15 years Tulip was finally withdrawn from service in 1940 when it was sold to a private buyer and transported to Selsey seafront for use as a holiday home. The present house of just over 2,000 sq ft has been constructed around the carriage creating a spacious and versatile beach side home with stunning coastal views. Reception rooms include a dual aspect living room with kitchenette, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the panoramic sea views over Aldwick Bay. An open plan family/dining room of nearly 49' in length creates a perfect room for entertaining with double doors onto the terrace and garden. For everyday family living this room has attractive panelled and leaded light stained glass partitions creating separate sitting and dining areas. Running along the coastal side of the house are the panelled rooms of the original Tulip carriage with their decorative marquetry, carvings and brass fittings. These include a bedroom, sitting room and dining room leading through to the adjacent kitchen/breakfast room. A covered decked veranda of some 38' in length runs along almost the entire length of the building making the most of the dramatic marine views. The bedroom accommodation is arranged principally in its own wing including 3 well-appointed suites each with their own shower rooms, plus a family bathroom to serve the panelled carriage bedroom. Outside To the west of the house a vehicular entrance opens onto a long driveway providing ample private parking and leading to a detached timber built garage. Double doors from the open plan family/dining room lead onto a paved and gravelled terrace with various sheltered sitting areas enclosed by decorative balustrade and having external power points. From here steps lead down to the lawned garden which is arranged on 2 levels. A 6 sided gazebo with bench seats provides covered seating and the garden is planted with an attractive variety of mature evergreen shrubs, decorative palms and several impressive oak trees. There is also a summer house with adjacent garden store. Location The coastal town of Selsey has an excellent range of local shops and facilities, catering for most everyday needs including a supermarket and banking facilities. The Cathedral City of Chichester lies some 8 1/2 miles to the north and provides a comprehensive range of shops, bars and restaurants, arranged partly within a pedestrianised centre. A mainline station from Chichester provides a regular service to London Victoria in about 1 hour 40 minutes. and there is a slightly faster service to London Waterloo from Havant, in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. The A27 provides good vehicle access across the south coast to Brighton, Worthing and Portsmouth.
